Drew, a girl?

Serious Drew. Maybe he's contemplating a big decision...Do I play the Sesame Street record? Hand it to Mommy? Throw it? Continue to hold it? Hmmmm.
Drew and I went to the mall today which is always fun. He pushes the stroller filled with the diaper bag, my purse and any shopping bags while I walk next to him looking like a fool. I don't get the obsession with pushing things but like a lot of babies, Drew lives for it. He rearranges our furniture on a daily basis. It's helpful when I'm cleaning under the kitchen table (after every one of his meals) and he moves the chairs for me. Speaking of helper, Drew is quite useful around the house. He helps with laundry by moving clothes from the washer to the dryer and he puts the clothes away as well if I show him which drawer they go in. He loves the positive reinforcement from me and I enjoy watching him do it (even if it takes 20 minutes to transfer laundry one sock at a time). So back to our trip to the mall....Two associates at Macy's thought Drew was a girl! Come on, he doesn't look like a girl! I know his hair is curly and in need of a haircut but his face and clothes scream boy, not to mention his personality. A few comments from them were... "How old is she? She's having a good time girl! Does she always smile like that? Oooooooh, she has teeth!!!! Keep her over there, don't need those teeth on this side of the counter." I need to stop there - did they think Drew was going to bite them? He's not a Pit Bull. Thinking he is a girl didn't bother me but the teeth reaction kind of weirded me out. Anyway, we took our socks (for George since four pair are missing a mate since I started doing our laundry) and headed for the food court. The folks at Chick-Fil-A are always happy to see Drew and aren't bothered by his teeth one bit.

Sports fan!

Drew claps for the team!
Drew checks out the action behind him for a little bit.

Drew is a serious sports fan! I have to brag on my Drewby because he was so darn cute, funny and sweet at the hockey game last night! He started smiling the minute we got in the arena and continued to smile the entire time. Well, I take that back. He broke a tad bit ugly at one point but that was only because we had just shared a huge tub of salty popcorn and the poor kid was parched. As soon as I filled his sippy cup (twice) with Aquafina he was good to go again. Any onlooker would have thought Drew knew exactly what was happening on the ice. He cheered at all the right times and said "oooooohhhhhhh" every time a fight broke out. He was truly a joy the entire game. He's my kind of date too because he likes to eat his way through the game. We shared a hot dog, pretzel and the salty popcorn. One of the cutest things was when he cheered for the National Anthem singer when she hit a high note at the end. I guess after hearing me sing for 13 months he was amazed at someone singing on key. Plus, she was a precious little 8 year old so he may have been cheering because he liked her. He has eyes for the older ladies. He passed out the minute we got in the car at 10pm but never showed signs of tiredness before that. What a trooper! We slept late this morning and had to rush to The Little Gym for class. He played hard with the other birds and then crashed the minute we got in the car. I was pleasantly surprised to see an appliance van in the driveway when we got home. After a hard search for the receipt to our dryer, we found it (actually I found it but am trying not to gloat) and realized the warranty was still good! Frigidaire sent an appliance repair man out right away and we are back in action. Let the laundry resume!

L'eggo My Eggo!

Drew waiting for me to serve breakfast.
BIG bite of an Eggo waffle.

While leisurely roaming down the frozen food aisle on our daily visit to Harris Teeter, I decided to get waffles. We make waffles sometimes but it's been a long time since we've had a good 'ole toaster waffle. I got Organic Omega-3 Whole Grain Waffles with Flax for me (luckily they aren't quite as nasty as they sound) and yummy buttermilk Eggo's for Drew. While eating our breakfast this morning I think Drew saw me eyeing his Eggo so he grabbed the whole thing before I could finish cutting it up. As you can see in the top picture, Drew likes to relax and get comfy while I make his meals. He looks at me like "Hey Mom, could you hussle a bit in the kitchen? I'm wasting away over here!" And he rests his foot like it's some kind of coffee table. I'm not sure how I'll teach him no elbows on the table when I can't even get his big feet off the table!

The most annoying thing happened today! Our dryer broke! The darn thing is only two years old. I remember that because we had to get a new one after Katrina ruined our other one. I will also mention that the dryer ruined by Katrina was only 6 months old. We're sick of buying dryers! We'll have to make a complaint to Frigidaire because sparks were flying out of it and the back looks burnt. The warranty expired recently so I'm sure they'll tell us to take a hike but I want them to know we're lucky the house didn't catch on fire. George will have to hit Home Depot right away because we do way too much laundry in this house to go without a dryer.

We're taking Drew to his first professional sporting event tonight! The NY Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes hockey game :) I love the excitment (and violence) of hockey so we're really looking forward to it!

X Games

My boys watching the Winter-X Games.

Does Drew look serious or what??? And don't you love that position? He is all man! Drew is heavy into the Winter-X games! It's as good as Sesame Street to him. Excuse George's droopy eyes, he has strep throat. He's been sick for a few weeks and although CVS appreciated his business, the daily trips to buy worthless over-the-counter meds had to stop! I found the address for a walk-in clinic and sent him there Sunday morning . The Doctor diagnosed him with strep immediately. He got two shots in the rear, a Z Pack and some other good stuff. Why is Drew in his lap you wonder? Well, after keeping the two of them apart for so long, my helpful neighbor told me tots can't get strep because their tonsils aren't fully developed. Not sure if that's true but I fell for it long enough to leave them and take a quick shower.

Drew and I spent a big part of today at my sweet Aunt Mary's house. Her Mother-in-Law died so we went by to drop off a casserole. Aunt Mary was hosting dinner for the family tonight so we hung around to help out in the kitchen. Drew was a sweetie the whole time and hopefully brought some smiles to those in pain. We all got a big laugh when I put his pj's on for the ride home. I knew he would fall asleep in the car since it was an hour past bedtime so I changed him before we left. I guess it's been awhile since I cleaned out the diaper bag because the pj's were a wee bit too small! Poor kid, his shoulders were bent forward and he couldn't straighten his legs because the jammies were three inches too short. We all laughed and laughed while he tried to walk but continued to fall. I told my Mom about it and she asked if we hurt Drew's feelings by laughing at him? Is that a smitten Grandmother or what?!?! As I sit here and type I am picturing Drew curled up in those tight pj's. Part of me thinks a good Mother would change him into bigger ones but the other part of me thinks a good Mother would just let the baby sleep. If he wakes up with a busted zipper I'll know I should have changed him.

Drew's first JD meal!

Drew with an ice cream cone at Jason's Deli. This was his first and last lick. He hated it. We were surprised because he doesn't dislike any food!

Good news! Bailey had a follow up appointment and the Vet thinks she'll make a full recovery without surgery! We're so happy. She has improved a lot and even swapped wet kisses with Drew yesterday :) She hasn't done that since she's been ill. We're supposed to start taking her on short walks in a week or two so she can start getting strength back in her legs. She should be 100% in another 4-8 weeks. Yippie for Bailey (and our bank account!).

Drew's semester at The Little Gym started Wednesday. He walked in the building and ran straight for the "Little Birds room." That's where his age group meets. I know, it's a corny name but he seems to think it's cool so I keep my chuckles to a minimum. I couldn't believe he remembered the place from three weeks ago but I guess it made a big impression on him. He and the other birds spent 45 exhausting minutes (for me, not him) listening to music and doing all kids of fun activities. I, on the other hand, worked up a sweat like I had been running in August heat and humidity. I'm beginning to think this Little Gym idea is a way to get Mom's to work out with the false impression we're doing something great for our kids. Drew did a good job the entire session except for when the teacher instructed the kids to roll a ball. Drew just wanted to throw the ball. She kept handing him balls and asking him to roll them. He of course continued to heave them across the room. I finally decided to have Drew sit that activity out but when the birds are ready for a ball throwing lesson, Drew is all over that!

Drew had his first meal at Jason's Deli yesterday. Like his Mother, he loved it! We'll have to make that a regular occasion because their kids menu is a great deal! Drew got a huge grilled cheese (that George finished), fruit (that I finished) and a small drink (which I filled with sweet tea and drank) all for $1.99.

We have a family friend visiting this evening so I have to start getting this place cleaned up.

Weekend of Firsts!

Drew at the kids table. Are those some cute kids or what?
Drew plays with a pink stroller :) Taking Guitar Hero very seriously!
First snow at our new home.

We did a lot of things this weekend that we've never done. Our firsts include...

- Drew ate a slice of pizza
- Drew ate at the "kids table."
- Drew ate a hotdog and absolutely loved it!
- Rocket launching in the freezing rain. Not the most fun (or smartest) thing in the world but George's friends had it planned and weren't going to let the weather stand in their way. The Mom's and kids stayed warm in the cars, or should I say carseat-packed SUV's. There were 9 adults and 8 kids :)
- Snow at our new home.
- Bailey made yellow snow.
- I played a Nintendo Wii.
- I had an asmtha attack scare while playing a video game. Hey, those track hurdles are a serious workout!
- Drew played with girl toys.
It is so fun to see Drew do things for the first time! There seem to be so many firsts lately and George and I look forward to many, many more!

Recent photos

Drew enjoys a grape popsicle.

Gangsta Drew in his Puma jumpsuit nurses Bailey back to health.
Drew takes off with his high chair tray!
Drew's first slice of pizza!
We've had a nice weekend so far! We went out for pizza Friday night at a New York style pizza place - George's favorite! Drew spent more time people-watching than eating but he had a great time!
We were expecting snow today but haven't seen anything but rain. Yuk!
Bailey has improved the last two days. She even got out of her bed and tried to get a toy this morning. She has to stay confined though even if she doesn't want too. Hopefully she'll continue to get better.
Not much news, just wanted to share some recent pictures.

A not-so-exciting outing

Close up of Drew as he races for the camera. I need a faster shutter.

Drew and I went to the opening of a Harris Teeter right by our house today. Harris Teeter is an overpriced grocery store for those of you that aren't familiar with it. When I worked on grand openings at Capital One Bank I used to wonder why anyone came to those silly events. Now I know why. They have kids and don't have anything better to do. From previous Harris Teeter shopping experiences I know they give balloons to all of the kids, which Drew loves, so I figured it was worth the stop just for that. It's a good thing we didn't have our hopes up because the balloon was about all we got. I was offerred a swallow-size sample of the Starbucks special of the day and we got a coupon for ten bucks off a prescription refill. Whoopty-doo! You would think that charging $4.00 for Dora the Explorer yogurt would at least afford a face painter. Harris Teeter doesn't have anything on Capital One Bank that's for sure!

We went to a playdate this morning. It wasn't what I had in mind since Drew mostly wanted me to hold him and I was expecting to chat with the other Mom's while he played. He was the youngest so I think it took him a while to warm up to the group. We're going to another one tomorrow so maybe he'll enjoy it more.

Bailey is the same. She's not better but luckily she's not any worse.

First toothbrush!

Drew plays with one of his favorite toys. Thanks sweet cousin Matty!!!
Drew spots his new toothbrush for the first time!
Check out that hair!

Drew started brushing his teeth (he has 6 now) and like everything else, he loves it! He didn't want to stop and got a little upset when I finally took it away. For a second I thought he was prolonging bedtime but then I realized he's a little young to be up to those tricks! For everyone who said Drew looks exactly like George... check out that hair! Poor kid, he definitely has my curls. It's only the back though as you'll see he's all George on the top!

I've been doing a couple of things with a Mom's Club here in Cary. Just trying to meet people that are new to the area as well. We joined a few of the Mom's and their kids at Bruegger's Bagels yesterday morning for breakfast. Our group pretty much took over the restaurant and I could tell everyone else wished they would have gone to Dunkin Donuts instead. We're going to a playdate tomorrow and another one Thursday with the same group. The other kids are older than Drew but he seems to enjoy it so hopefully we'll have fun.

Drew had his first real tantrum yesterday. I thought he had one before but after seeing this one I know any previous episodes were just a warm up. We were at my sister's and I was watching Drew and Whitley, my niece. Drew spotted a candle stick that he just had to have. He walked toward it numerous times and I continued to move him and tell him he couldn't have it. He started rolling on the floor, kicking his legs and throwing things as he came upon them. A fake cry accompanied the whole thing, a tear was never shed. After a couple of minutes I had to leave the room because I was laughing so hard and didn't want to reinforce his behavior. It was just the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen! I told him he was putting forth a lot of effort for a candle but I guess he disagreed! He eventually forgot why he was crying in the first place and it ended. It was really funny and he was precious even while throwing a tantrum. He's got me so wrapped around his finger!

Drew and I didn't do much today, just a trip to Wally and Chick-fil-a. We shared a nuggets combo and then people-watched. He loves to do that! A lot of people were watching him too and a few stopped to say hello. We were there over an hour so maybe the staff was just making sure we weren't up to no good. It takes him a while to eat "real food," especially when he takes breaks to watch the older kids on the playground.

Sweet Bailey hurt her back. It's pretty common for Dachshunds because of their length. George spent most of Monday at the vet and met with a few different specialists to discuss the options. Surgery is a big possibility but we have her home with us now to see if she will heal on her own. She's on anti-inflamatory drugs so we'll see what happens. She's such a sweetie and trooper despite how helpless she is. She can't walk and has to be confined to her crate to ensure she doesn't try to walk or jump. Very sad!

Drew update

Drew drinks from a big cup!

Drew watches the Dueling Banjos his Day Day, my Daddy, got for him. He was laughing really hard but then looked at me and wondered why I was ruining his moment by taking pictures.

It's been a few days since I've posted. I feel like I've been busy but I don't have a lot of news so not sure what we've been up to! Guess time just flys between laundry, feeding Drew, playing, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, etc. Drew and I went to The Little Gym on Thursday and he had a blast! It's a class with lots of activities that the Mom's (and one Dad) participate in with their child. We just went to check it out but decided to join for the Spring because Drew loved it so much. I was so proud of him the whole time! He interrupted "class" about 15 times to give the teacher a hug. He's so affectionate and sweet! I got a kick out of watching all of the kids and seeing the different personalities. There was the token cute girl, bully (walked up out of nowhere and pushed Drew; I had to break ugly!), attention hog (with equally obnoxious Mom), Class of 2024 Most Intellectual, you get the point. Drew was the sweet, smart, happy, cute one if you ask me!

Drew has started doing all kinds of new things lately. He's really growing up and learning a lot. A few of my favorites...

- Claps when he or anyone else does something he likes. Grammy CC taught him this!
- Turns off light switches. CC taught him this one too!
- Eats everthing we're eating (including enchiladas, fritos and cheetos). I know, I know, I shouldn't feed him junk food but he gets upset if he can't have what we're eating and I don't like to upset him. Nor do I like to put away the cheetos just because I don't want him to have any.
- Sits in laps on his own. Picture this - he walks backwards toward a lap and then slowly sits down while looking at the person and smiling as if to say "here I come, are you ready for me?" It's adorable!
- Starts undressing when he sees his bath water running.
- Drinks out of a regular cup. See picture! Unfortunely, as soon as I took this picture he leaned his head waaaaay back and water went everywhere. George and I got a big laugh after Drew finally caught his breath and quite gagging.
- Runs. I didn't even know he could do it until Meg at The Little Gym said to run in a circle and he took off.
- Picks up the phone and starts "talking." His talking sounds like "glop glop glop glop clop clop clop glop no oh no oh no oh no glop glop glop clop clop eeeeeehhhhhhhh!!!!!"
- He says "uh oh" when anything falls or when he purposely drops things.
- He almost holds one finger up when asked "Drew, how old are you?" He would probably have it down by now if we wouldn't have mixed things up by asking "Drew, who's #1?" and shouting "LSU!!!" since Tuesday.

I'm sure I'm missing some things. There is so much new stuff and I can hardly keep up. I am thrilled to watch these things first hand. Every minute with him is tons of fun!

Geaux Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

George and I from our seats
The Sore Thumb
Herman and I on Bourbon St.
Ward, George and I at the Cat's Meow

I know I started a blog to share stories and pictures of Drew but this post is all about the LSU Tigers!!! George and I just got back from New Orleans and are still on cloud nine! What an amazing experience to be in the Dome for a sporting event like that. Let me stop and say thanks to our best friend Ward for helping us get tickets. You're the best Ward and we miss you so much! George and I flew to New Orleans Monday with only a very small duffel bag in hand. I felt like a college freshman on spring break. It was a great feeling! We didn't have any concrete plans, we just wanted to have tons of fun and see the Tigers win! We succeeded!

Trip highlights:
- LSU's win of course
- On time flights - thanks Express Jet!
- Tailgating at The Sore Thumb, our friends' school bus converted to LSU party bus. Check it out in the picture! Is that a tailgate or what?
- Tailgating with Ward, the Brawders and other friends at Tiger One.
- Lunch with my good friend Cristina before we departed today.
- Picture with Left Guard Herman Johnson on Burbon Street. I think it was one of his lowlights of the night though. Is it me or does he look scared to death in the photo? By the way, I'm on my tippy toes just trying to be in the same frame as him. That's one huge dude!
- Did I mention LSU's victory? Whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!

Trip lowlights:
- Missing Drew
- George forbidding me from singing "Here I Go Again On My Own" by Whitesnake at the Cat's Meow.
- George forbidding me from singing "Hurts So Good" by John Mellencap at the Cat's Meow.
- George forbidding me from singing anything at the Cat's Meow.
- Ward's heinous smelling hotel room. Did you find a dead animal in there?
- Four golden girls (not the LSU dancing kind either) sitting next to us at the game. Seriously, why would four 75 year old women go to a game like that? They didn't cheer or stand up once, all they did was ask us to move so they could get by for restroom breaks and more nachos.

We stayed out till after 5am which is the latest I've been up since 2001! We were so happy to be back in New Orleans, even for such a short trip. There really is no place like it! Our favorite sign? "Hotter Women, Better Food, Faster Players" It was a trip of a lifetime and we're so glad we went. LSU Football is the best and we're already looking forward to a trip to Baton Rouge for a home game in '08! Geaux Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Lynne for your hospitality, toiletries and friendship!

Drew stayed with my Mom at my sister's house and had a blast. According to my Mom, his CC, he was "perfect!" How was Drew today? Perfect! Did he eat well? Perfect! How was he when you put him down for a nap? Perfect! What's he doing now? Being perfect! Looks like CC would watch him again in the future! Way to go Drew!

Sweet Cousins

The last couple of days have been busy, busy, busy. We got the sectional and fridge Thursday and the installation of the built-in fridge was a production! I won't go into details because the story is so insane you'll think I made it up. Drew was irritated with the lunch I fed him so he took his shirt off (see picture). This was a first but I have a feeling it's not the last. Friday was spent furniture shopping in High Point, the world furniture mart. Talk about a long, tiring day! We stopped by Cristie's on the way back and had tons of fun. Drew and Whitely are such sweet cousins and love each other so much! Drew is fascinated by her and gently patted her head many times. He leaned in and kissed her over and over. I was so proud of him! Whitley just smiled and smiled at Drew. She's so pretty! My Mom was there and loving every minute of it! She is visiting my sister for a couple of weeks to watch Whitley while Cristie starts back to work. George and I leave Monday morning for the National Championship so Mom is watching both grandkids. If anyone can handle it, she can, but it sounds exhausting to me! Better run, Drew has been playing very nicely with a fire truck for quite some time but now he's pulling down our temporary paper blinds.

First day on the job

Today is what I'm considering my first day as a stay-at-home Mom because George started back to work. I did a great job if I do say so myself. I even brought a hot breakfast of egg, sausage and cheese casserole to George in his office! Hope he doesn't get used to it because I only had something to serve him thanks to my sweet Aunt Mary who sent us home with leftovers from her New Year's Day brunch. Tomorrow he gets bran flakes. I took Bailey out this morning to discover the coldest day yet! She only stayed out long enough to do her business and then ran inside and high jumped into her bed. She snuggled under the covers and hasn't moved all day except when her meals were served. Drew and I had a great time playing with all of his new toys and then decided to venture out to run some errands. We didn't stay long because I heard a girl squeal "it's snowing!" while I was rummaging through the leftover holiday goodies at Hallmark. You've got to be kidding! I bundled Drew up in his new winter coat and we ran for the car. I was afraid it was going to come down harder and I haven't driven in snow since, well, ever so didn't want to risk it. I fed Drew lunch when we got home and then he took a nap. Before I knew it the "work" day was over. I had a long to-do list and only marked off a couple of things. I would say tomorrow will be more productive but we're expecting our new fridge and sectional so it sounds like a busy day!

Happy New Year!

One of my New Year's resolutions is to start a blog. It's January 1st and I'm hitting the ground running. I hope I'm as eager to keep it updated as I am to get going! I decided to do a blog in hopes of keeping family and friends updated on Drew and our new venture to Cary, NC. Enjoy!

We got off to a rocky start with the move. As you know, we were expecting our second child and lost the pregnancy in early December. To say we were devasted is a huge understatement. I felt helpless, numb and lonely despite a wonderful support system. Things have gotten better the past couple of weeks and I'm hoping they continue to do so.

On to happier things....

Drew had his 1st birthday December 12th and my sweet Mom and sister put a little party together for him with cupcakes and other goodies. Drew had a blast and discovered a serious love for balloons! We also had a wonderful Christmas with George's Mom and my parents in Myrtle Beach. It was relaxing and fun which was just what we needed! We came back "home" to more good times with my sister Cristie, Tom, and my sweet and beautiful niece Whitley. Then our family from Happiesburg, MS (some of you may know it as Hattiesburg) came to North Carolina and the fun continued. We had three straight days of get togethers with loved ones. It was a memorable holiday season!

Drew really enjoyed Christmas, opening just about every toy available at Target, Wally, and Toys 'R Us. You name it, he got it! One of the many HUGE hits was a tunnel. You can see him enjoying it in the picture above. What could be more fun to a 1 year old than going in and out of a tunnel? Going in and out of a tunnel with a grandparent beaming with love and excitement at the end, that's what! "What Drew wants, Drew gets" was the Christmas motto! I can't blame them, I pretty much live by the same motto and I'm with him 24/7.

We really like our new home and look forward to settling in. We are eager to buy furniture and get everything finished. Too bad George and I both detest furniture shopping. Something about shopping with Drew doesn't make it any easier. You know you've hit your limit when you see the sign that reads "supervised children welcome" and then walk in and put a one year old boy on the ground to run free. Yes, I am that parent! All the years I critized others for not taking control of their kids in public and I let Drew pretty much terrorize the furniture (and associates). When it came down to it, he only destroyed a couple of sale signs and popped one balloon. No harm done really.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year! Please visit the new Davis Family blog and keep us updated on you and yours as well. Until next time...

Oops, one more thing! How could I forget to mention Bailey? She is doing great. George put both of her beds by floor heat vents in our new home and she got plenty of ham scraps from my Dad at Christmas. It doesn't get any better than that for her!
